Where to find IPA deals in National IPA Day

This Week in Atlanta Beer

Atlanta Craft Beer

The first Thursday in August is glorious for a number of reasons and today I’m not just talking about the kids starting back to school. It’s National IPA Day, and we’re going to have some fun with this.

A very quick history lesson on how IPAs came to be:

As Britain was in colonization mode, one of their strongholds was in India. The colonists wanted to drink beer from back home but the climate in India wasn’t conducive to brewing. Attempts to send Pale Ale’s to India failed because the beer didn’t fare well on the long sea voyage.

The solution was to boost the alcohol content and add a lot of hops to the beer in England so it would preserve the Pale Ale on its trip to India.

The result was a hoppy version of their Pale Ale which was called an India Pale Ale.

Here’s where you can go around Atlanta to celebrate National IPA Day:

  • Terrapin is pouring $3 pints in Athens.
  • Sweetwater came out with a brand new Dank Tank, a Brut Double IPA.
  • Wrecking Bar Brewpub on Moreland Ave. brought out its latest batch of Juice Willis.
  • Tucker Brewing doesn’t have an IPA offering, so they’ve “turned IPA Day on its head” and are giving $1off TKR Pilsner.
  • Scofflaw has four new IPAs on tap: Mr. Hyde IPA, Not So Fast IPA, Broken Promise IPA, and Troll Cave IPA.
  • Everyone who visits Jekyll Brewing in Alpharetta gets a free pour of 8-Bit Revival DIPA.
  • Monday Night Brewing is selling pints of Hop Hut in the West Midtown taproom.
  • You can get $2 off Red Hare IPAs.
  • Sceptre Brewing Arts used local beets in this Red Eyed Devil Beet Double IPA, which you can get today.
  • Hopstix has three IPAs on draft: Kung Fu Hops, Kung Fu Hops 2, and Going Solo.
  • Cherry Street Brewing collaborated with New Realm and Piedmont Brewing to create Token Rhyme, a West Coast IPA honoring the late Grateful Dead front man Jerry Garcia.
  • Pontoon Brewing is throwing its second annual Hooch Hopped IPA Day at the Chattahoochee Nature Center.
  • Steady Hand Beer Company has two special IPAs ready: A Green Tea and Lemon Hazy IPA and a Passion Fruit, Coconut and Pineapple IPA.
  • Argosy in East Atlanta Village is hosting National IPA Day with Monday Night Brewing and Creature Comforts. They’ll tap some special IPA kegs from both beer makers.

If you’re looking for a few new non-IPAs, I’ve got you covered.

Eventide Brewing is releasing Down to Earth on Friday. It’s a Belgian Blond from their Belgian series.

Guess what’s back? Over and Over and Over from Orpheus Brewing. It’s a pineapple and vanilla sour that’ll be available in their tasting room on Saturday and retail sites next week.

"So that's what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing.” The Big Lebowski is one of my favorite movies of all time. Six Bridges Brewing is launching a white Russian stout called Out of Your Element on Thursday.

It’s August 1, but that close enough to October for Dry County, who will share its 2019 Oktoberfest starting Friday.
