Harry Styles' New Album About 'Having Sex and Feeling Sad'

The “Sign of the Times” singer is speaking our language

August 27, 2019

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Harry Styles offers up the first glimpse at his upcoming sophomore album, explaining it’s about “having sex and feeling sad.”

Long known to be the two key ingredients to any great pop album, the LP will be his first since his solo debut in 2017, and those five words are enough to put us in line. Styles also shares the influence psychedelics has had on his process, touring the studio in Malibu and recalling mushroom-fueled sessions inside and out.

"Did a lot of mushrooms in here,” he tells Rolling Stone as they walk into Shangri-La studios. “We’d do mushrooms, lie down on the grass, and listen to Paul McCartney’s Ram in the sunshine,” he explains. “This is where I was standing when we were doing mushrooms and I bit off the tip of my tongue. So I was trying to sing with all this blood gushing out of my mouth. So many fond memories, this place.”

It’s all part of the new, more open Harry Styles – unafraid to share and dive into real emotions. "I’m discovering how much better it makes me feel to be open with friends. Feeling that vulnerability, rather than holding everything in,” he tells Rolling Stone. The shift has bled, for lack of a better word, into his songwriting, as Styles explains.

“I will tell you that I can be really pathetic when I’m jealous. Feeling happier than I’ve ever been, sadder than I’ve ever been, feeling sorry for myself, being mad at myself, being petty and pitiful — it feels really different to share that.”
