New Beer in West Midtown is Much Closer

This Weekend in Atlanta Beer

Atlanta Craft Beer

The weather wasn’t all that nice to the breweries and attendees of The Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting last Saturday, but beer was still consumed and awards given out.

Congrats to Bold Monk Brewing Company for winning the Specialty Beer category with their Excommunication avec Figue Noir, and to Arches Brewing for winning the Classic Beer category with Bob’s Your Uncle.

From big events and award-winning brews to new breweries…

This year has the potential for big growth in craft beer in Atlanta. A few of the local spots that made noise over the last few weeks were Monkey Wrench Brewing and Fire Maker Brewing Company.

Earlier this month on Instagram, Monkey Wrench hinted to a late January opening in Suwanee. Their newsletter offered a little more clarity as Saturday from 2-8 p.m. a “soft opening” will happen in their taproom. Sunday, Jan. 19, will be from 2-6 p.m. Next weekend they’ll keep the same hours.

Fire Maker released Episode 14 of their brewery update videos (which have been incredible, BTW). Construction is happening now in their brewery and taproom in West Midtown and owner Elliott Hall inched forward to establishing a date. “We are getting closer on having some dates for opening. But we’re not sure yet.”

  • Saturday at 9 a.m., Good Word Brewing will release Hollow Moon, a 9% Imperial Stout with toasted coconut, cocoa nibs, vanilla, and brown sugar. This will be a “very limited” in-house only release.
  • Monday Night has two new brews to look forward to. On Friday (Jan. 17) Busy Little Bee hits The Garage. It’s a 9% sour with local Georgia Galberry honey and notes of nectarine, honeysuckle, pear, pineapple, and lemon peel to name a few. On Friday of next week (Jan. 24) distribution of low-cal Lay Low will begin. Right now you can taste this 90-calorie IPA in the West Midtown taproom.
  • The first release of 2020 from Atlanta Brewing Company comes in the form of Baked Goods II, next in their cobbler series. It’s a kettle sour with peach, walnuts, cinnamon, vanilla and maple syrup. It hits the taproom Friday.
  • The return of Athena Paradiso with tart cherry, raspberry, and cranberry is back from Creature Comforts. Friday is the day.
  • The next in the Push Cart Series from New Realm gets released on Tuesday (Jan. 21). It’s a collab with King of Pops and it’s a chocolate sea salt Imperial Ale.
  • If you can’t wait for summer, Orpheus Brewing released a small batch of their pineapple and vanilla sour earlier in the week. It’s only available locally in their tasting room.
  • Pontoon Brewing will release a “very limited” batch of Brownie Batter #2 on Saturday. They took Brownie Batter #1 and blended it with a batch that had been aged in VSOP Cognac barrels for eight months. They also added toasted Macadamia nuts, coconut Hawaiian vanilla, and coffee.
  • Coming soon to the Red Hare Brewing taproom is Ain’t that a Peach, a Berliner Weiss brewed with peaches with Lactobacillus added later.
